Student Federation claims justice for students of economically weaker section
The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) Guwahati, gheraoed the office of the Director of Higher Education, Kahilipara demanding justice for economically backward students. They had a staged protest and further submitted a memorandum to the Education Minister, Siddharth Bhattacharya through the Education Director.
According to the sources, the federation became agitated over certain conditions posed to the economically backward students. Most of the demands were concerning to unconditional admission for economically backward students. More seats are to be opened for admission including provisions of basic amenities in colleges, and to take in two students namely Upasana Das and Chandan Das who were expelled from Chaygoan College.
The federation had earlier stated in a circular on May 29th, 2019 that, they strongly opposed to the circular where the college had come up for economically deprived students with back paper in their previous semester and with less than 75 percentage present in the current semester won’t be given free admission. This circular is both unethical and unacceptable as SFI President Kashyap Choudhury stated.
They further mentioned that lack of infrastructure is hampering the semester system. Those financially unsound students would have to put a stop at their education midway. Additionally if a mandatory 90 days class per semester doesn’t take place then where does the 75% comes from? Secondly, for families whose income is less than 2 Lakhs per annum and students whose parents are either state or central employees, financial aid should be changed for such students.
