In a meeting on 22nd of July , 1947, the Indian National Flag, designed by Pingali Venkayya, was first adopted by the Indian Constitution Assembly. We celebrate Indian Flag Adoption Day to commemorate this great historical event of India.

In a meeting on 22nd of July , 1947, the Indian National Flag, designed by Pingali Venkayya, was first adopted by the Indian Constitution Assembly. We celebrate Indian Flag Adoption Day to commemorate this great historical event of India. The present form of the national flag officially declared as an official flag of the “Dominion of India” in a meeting of Constitution Assembly.

The first Indian flag  had religious symbols and eight roses on it with Vande Matram written in the middle. It was hoisted on August 7, 1906 at Parsi Bagan Square in Kolkata. The Second Indian flag had partial modifications. It was hoisted by Bhikaji Cama in Germany. Bal Gangadhar Tilak used a different type of flag in the year 1917. The flag had the Union Jack on the top left and Crescent on top right corner. It also had seven stars. In 1921, a new flag which contained colours according to religions came into existence. This flag was designed with the Ashoka Chakra in the centre. To avoid the spiritual intrusion, a new flag came into existence. It had three colours, saffron, white and green with a chakra in the middle.

It was adopted in the year 1931 when First Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru proposed before the constituent assembly the horizontal tricolor with color saffron, white and green on the flag in equal proportion and Ashoka Chakra in blue printed on the white space in between after India gained independence. The constituent assembly headed by Dr. Rajendra Prasad with everyone’s agreement passed the resolution in favor of the tricolor flag. On January 26, 1950, Tiranga became the flag of the Republic of India.

Few facts about Indian National Flag

Karnataka Khadi Gramodyoga Samyukta Sangha located in Bengeri village of Dharwad district in Karnataka is the only unit that holds the manufacturing rights of the Indian National Flag.

On 22 August 1907, Bhikaji Rustom Cama became the first to raise the Indian Flag on foreign soil. She unfurled the Indian Flag at the 2nd International Socialist Congress in Stuttgart.

On 29 May 1953, the Indian Flag was hoisted on the Mount Everest, along with the Union Jack and the Nepalese National Flag.

On 14 November 2008, India became the 4th country to land its Flag on the Moon. Chandrayaan-1 ejected its Moon Impact Probe The Indian Tricolor was marked on all sides of the Probe.

On 7 December 2014, the Indian Flag set a Guinness Record for the Largest Human Flag formation at Nandanam YMCA Ground in Chennai, India. In the event, more than 50000 volunteers took part.

The closest resemblance to the Indian Flag is that of the Flag of Niger.
