Organ Donation is donating a donor’s organs like heart, liver, kidneys, intestines, lungs, and pancreas, after the donor dies, for the purpose of transplanting them into another person who is in need of an organ. Every year  13th of August  is celebrated as Organ Donation Day. The main aim of the day is to spread the awareness about organ donation after death.

A notable American automobile Corporation named Saturn Corporation incorporated with its business partners, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and other nonprofit health organizations and launched this National Donor Day by the year 1998 to encourage organ donation.

Due  to  failure of their major functioning organs anytime  at least more than 5 lakhs of the Indians are dying every year.  The organ transplantation could play a major role in their beautiful life by increasing their period of living.  Nearly 20 people die due to organ failure per day and per every 10 minutes.  Many times, a living person can donate one of his/her kidneys to a person suffering from kidney failure. The donor and recipient, both, can live a healthy life after the donation. The organs that  can be donated depending on the age, medical condition and conditions at the time of death:
• Heart• Lungs• Liver• Kidneys• Pancreas• Small Intestine• Eyes

Some unknown facts about organ donation

• The special aspect of liver is that it has the capability that within three months after surgery liver can grow to its complete size.

• Human tissues like  cornea, skin, veins, heart valves, bones and tendons and connective tissues.

• Intestine donation is rare but can be well executed. Live donation can be employed and a living person can donate a portion of his intestine.

• Since pancreases are organs that can redeem their functionality with time a living person can donate a portion of his/her  pancreas.

So, this World Organ donation day, let us  take a pledge to help those who are in need of organs for survival and  help them live more!
