Indian Air Force (IAF) Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman to be conferred Vir Chakra

Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman will be conferred with the Vir Chakra On Independence Day. He had shot down F-16 Fighter Jet of Pakistan Air Force. Soon after the F-16 was downed, Varthaman was injured as his MiG-21 Bison jet was hit and he was captured by the Pakistani Army.

On the 73rd Independence Day, Indian Air Force (IAF) Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman will be conferred with Vir Chakra.

He was captured by Pakistan for almost 60 hours after Balakot airstrike in February Abhinandan Varthaman, became the face of the military confrontation between India and Pakistan in February this year.

40 jawans were killed on February 14  in the Pulwama terror attack. Pakistan-based terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed claimed responsibility for the attack.

Days after the Pulwama attack, the Indian Air Force (IAF) carried out an airstrike at a terror camp run by Jaish-e-Mohammed AIF foiled the Pakistani retaliation, and in the dogfight, a Pakistani fighter jet F-16 was downed by Abhinandan Varthaman showing great determination and courage. 

Soon after the F-16 was downed, Varthaman was injured as his MiG-21 Bison jet was hit and he was captured by the Pakistani Army. He was released on the night of the 1st march by Pakistan and was taken off flying duties due to injuries.

The Wing Commander is expected to resume his duties soon as he has cleared all medical tests.

Abhinandan became popular worldwide when photographs of him — captured, blindfolded and handcuffed by the Pakistani military — surfaced.

A video was also released in which he sipped tea and said his captors were treating him well. India built diplomatic pressure on Pakistan on March 1, Abhinandan was finally released.
