World Photography Day is celebrated worldwide on August 19. This day is very special for people who are fond of photography. The World Photography Day originated from the invention of the daguerreotype, a photographic processes developed by Frenchmen Louis Daguerre and Joseph Nicephore Niepce in 1837.
On January 9, 1839, The French Academy of Sciences announced the photographic process and on August 19, 1839, the French government announced the invention as a gift free to the world.
Johan Zahn made the world’s first camera in the year 1685. While 205 years ago today, in 1814 the camera was first used to click photos. However, the first durable color photograph was taken by Thomas Sutton in 1861. The first digital photograph was taken in 1957; almost 20 years before Kodak’s engineer invented the first digital camera. However, it was much later on August 19, 2010, when the World Photo Day hosted its first global online gallery.
To commemorate the 80th world photography day, NCPA’s Piramal Art Gallery, Mumbai held an exhibition on August 17th, 2019. The exhibition had nearly 150 books on display documenting the works of celebrated photographers like Ansel Adams, Henry Cartier Bresson, Yousuf Karsh, Robert Capa and even Indian photographers like Raghubir Singh, Raghu Rai, Kishor Parekh, Neemai Ghosh, Ashok Dilwali to name a few.
