Delhi Government on toes after water released from Hathni Kund Barrage

Rains have been playing havoc in several north Indian states that have caused 30 people losing their lives to floods, landslides, and cloudbursts.

The hilly region of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand with 23 deaths and 7 deaths respectively with three have died in Punjab. 

Now along with the rainwater, it is the Hathni Kund Barrage in Haryana which have released water. 

The Yamuna’s water level at 10 am today was 204.8m. There are apprehension it could soon cross the danger mark of 205.3m. In 2018 it went up to 206.05m. 

The highest water level recorded was in 1978 when it reached 207.4 m. An official of the Irrigation and Flood Control Department said that the water discharged from Hathni Kund Barrage normally takes 72 hours to reach the capital.

The government is already on an alert mode.  The Chief Minister held a meeting with the Divisional Commissioner of Delhi on 19th August. 

People are usually evacuated during monsoons.  

The administration has already started evacuating people, putting up tents and rescue teams along with boats on standby mode.

The focus is on six districts along the Yamuna. Medicines, food, and water are also being kept ready.
