The final draft for The National Register of Citizens (NRC) is to be published on August 31, 2019.

The NRC which is being updated in Assam is not only making families insecure but also is breaking families.

Recently two families which hail from Berenga Part V, Nayagram in southern Assam’s Silchar, broke their relationship over an argument regarding NRC.

Rehna’s ( name changed) (daughter of  Kutub Uddin Barbhuiya)  marriage was canceled with  Dilwar Hussain Lashkar at the last minute as the would-be groom failed to produce his citizenship documents.

Both the families had agreed to the marriage but trouble arose when the girl’s family enquired about the citizenship documents for the safety of their daughter’s future.

Dilwar’s name was omitted from the list of legal citizens. He was among the 40 lakh people whose name was  omitted from the draft citizens register which was published in July last year.

Though the family claimed that accept Dilwar, all other family members name was in the draft NRC and the family members were hopeful that Dilwar’s name too would be included in the final list. But this did not convince the girl’s family and they called off the wedding.

Though the final NRC draft is to be published on 31st August little is known about the future of those whose name has not been published in the list.

It was later known that the couple has eloped and the woman’s family has filed an FIR at Silchar police station alleging Dilwar to have kidnapped her.
