On the first day of the 2-day session of the Manipur State Legislative Assembly, the eighth session of the 11th  Manipur Legislative Assembly resolved to rename the Imphal International Airport as ‘Bir Tikendrajit International Airport’.

Chief Minister, N. Biren Singh, initiated the movement for the name change while Okram Ibobi Singh, the leader of the Opposition supported the motion and suggested that the House forward the resolution adopted by the august House to the concerned authority at the earliest.

The name change of the international airport has been a cherished dream of the people of Manipur and the Assembly’s resolution was widely appreciated.

Leichil Luwang, an independent filmmaker based in Manipur said it was a good move. “Like Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport, like Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi Airport, Bir Tikendrajit International Airport was a true patriot of Manipur who opposed the British and was hanged to death along with two Generals of the army of Manipur. Later recognizing his bravery and courage, the title Bird was affixed before his name.

Deservingly the Imphal international airport has been renamed after Tikendrajit. This is certainly a proud moment of all Manipuri,” remarked Luwang.
