54th Hunger Marchers’ day observed in Manipur

Thousands of students, parents of student martyrs, well-wishers as well as civil society leaders gathered at Pishum Chingamacha, Imphal and paid rich floral tributes to the portraits of the three martyrs who were in police action during the protest against artificial famine-like situation created by the then government on August 27, 1965.

A mally students’ rally marked the day which took off from the memorial site at Pishum Chingamcha and proceeded towards Keishamapat, Nagamapal and ended at the NCC ground at Khoyathong. 

As precautionary measures, large security personnel were deployed at strategic junctions along the route of the rally.  To ease traffic congestion and to prevent any untoward incidents, security barricades were also placed at different locations.

The student’s marchers shouted different slogans demanding the implementation of the Inner Line permit system, laying bare the contents of Naga Peace Talk, controlling the price of essential commodities among others. 

On this day in 1965, a large number of students protested against the then government who had created an artificial scarcity of rice threatening to bring for famine.

In that uprising, security forces charged and assaulted the students leading to the death of 4 protesters.

The next day a meeting of students was conducted which led to the formation of ALL Manipur Students Union on August 28.

Addressing the gathering on Tuesday at the NCC ground inside DM college campus , general secretary general of North East Students Organisation and also the advisor of AMSU Sinam Prakash expressed dissatisfaction over some schools which remain closed to avoid participation in the rally and further highlighted the need of unitedly fighting together to save Manipur from different external forces.

Former president of AMSU, Aribam Manisana said that the education system of the state have improved to a certain extent but express worry over the condition of schools in far-flung areas which remains neglected. 

If the government since the past had gradually work for the overall development of education in the state, the present status of education will be much better, he added.

Current president of AMSU, Peter Laishram while informing the role played by the union in different issues of Manipur and the activities taken up by the union since its inception also commented on the Naga Peace Talk between the NSCN IM and the government of India and said that the contents of  the peace talk should be made public.

He stated that AMSU will not accept and tolerate any administrative arrangement in favour of any particular community and there should be no political arrangement that can reduce the member of Manipur legislative assembly.
