He fell between two Bengals and did not get the fame he deserved: Tathagata Roy

Tathagata Roy, Governor of Meghalaya played rich tribute to the author Syed Mujtaba Ali.

In a series of tweet Roy wrote-
Syed Mujtaba Ali, one of my most favourite prose writers in Bengali, was born today in 1904 at Karimganj, Assam. A direct disciple of the poet Tagore and truly a world citizen, he was fluent in some 11 languages. His nephew Syed Moazzem Ali is Bangladeshi High Commissioner to India.
The reason why I call him a world citizen is because of the clarity with which he has described for the unfamiliar Bengali reader scenes and social life in Amanullah-era Afghanistan, Weimar Germany, France, Austria and on shipboard.

He fell between two Bengals and did not get the fame he deserved. He began life as Principal of Bogra College in erstwhile East Pakistan and angered a West Paki big shot by saying that Iqbal as a poet could not hold half a candle to Tagore. For this ‘sin’ he was hounded out of Pakistan and spent his life in India. RIP, Sir.

~ Tathagata Roy

Mamata Banerjee, West Bengal Chief Minister thr a tweet also paid her tribute on Syed Mujtaba Birth Anniversary today.
