Rally On Crime Against Women

Concerned by the increasing trend of crime against women and attacks on human rights defenders in the state, a mass protest and public meeting was held at Ringui village in Manipur’s Ukhrul district of Manipur on 21st September and was organised by Ringui Women Society Ukhrul. 

Around 150 men, women, girls and boys, participated in the protest rally, holding placards of slogans like ‘Arrest the attackers on U Natacha on 4th July 2019’, ‘Punish all the criminals (rapist and murderer)’, ‘police should cease intimidating WAD and NGOs immediately’, ‘Women are also human, treat women as human being, women rights is human rights’.

The main objective of the march was to sensitize the people of the area of the increasing crime against women, attack on human right defenders and family, especially the 4th July attack to U Natacha and the 24th July gun attack to WAD, (Women Action for Development) a women specific NGO operating in Manipur. 

Prior to rally, a public meeting was held where subject experts and activists spoke on the increasing crime against women and systematically attack to human rights defenders and families. 

Resources spoke on various topics and deliberated on the need to stop these social menace. Phamila Tuithung shared on the topic ‘’Women and Drug issues’’, Ng Liklaileima on the topic ‘’Role of Media in preventing Crime against Women’’, Priyadarshini M Gangte on the topic ‘’Customary practices among the tribal community’’, Sobita Mangsatabam on the topic ‘’Gender Based Violence in Manipur’’. 

Reverend Arui, Pastor Ringui Baptist Church, Phillimon Ahun village elder, Tammina Women Chairperson, Ringui Baptist Church, Ruth, Secretary Ringui Women Society, Sobita Mangsatabam, Secretary Women Action for Development, Priyadarshini M. Gangte, Lecturer Damdei Christian College respectively were the presidium members and resource persons.
