Minister for Social Welfare Okram Henry called upon the people of the State to join hands to eliminate and eradicate all forms of discrimination against girl child in the State. This was stated by him at the function organised by District Administration, Imphal East under International Day for Girl Child and Beti Bachao Beti Bachao campaign held at DC Complex, Imphal East today.
Speaking as Chief Guest of the function, Okram Henry said that a collective effort is a must to improve the social, political and economic status of women in the State. He opined that the status of women in the State is relatively better compared to other states of the country. The female literacy rate of the State is above the national average, he added.
The Minister also stated that Manipuri girls have outshined boys in various competitive examinations including those conducted by UPSC. Many top posts in both government and private sectors are successfully held by women in the State, he added. He appealed to the CSOs, local clubs, NGOs to organise awareness and sensitization campaign so as to bring gender equality in the State.
Okram Henry expressed his concern over the report of various unwanted incidents against women in the State. He sought cooperation from the public and support to prevent such unfortunate incidents in future. He maintained that we must collectively strive to build a safe and secure environment for girls and women in the State. On the occasion, the Minister distributed prizes to the Girl Achievers’ of Imphal East district.
DC Imphal East Khumanthem Diana, SP Imphal East Haobijam Jogeshchandra, officials of District Administration and others were present during the function.
