We need sustainable goals not only to be talked about but also each citizen are to be a party to these
Sustainable Development Goals advocated by the United Nations and almost all the countries are party to the set goals. We have seen advocacy, many seminars and writings on these goals. Each day there are some analysis, talks, events taking place across the globe.
These goals now should be taken seriously by the authorities at the last mile, and actionable activities are undertaken at the grassroots level by the respective local governments. Time has come for backward integration as these goals are for the mankind to achieve and even though we are not able to reach the last mile for basic facilities, but sensitising people at the end of the funnel will help solve many challenges much faster.
Here how it will work I believe. The last mile people are the least aware in terms of bigger environmental problems. Now if they can be made to live a sustainable life without harming the environment, the impacts would be that we are stopping the harm from the last mile itself. The model environment will help people in the populous region fell ashamed of what they are doing whereas backward regions are more planet-friendly.
The human race is an exploring one and the environmental issues are because of these tendencies. We try to explore and thereby exploit the unexplored. Making people conscious of the ill effect of pollution, climate change, and health issues at the remotest corners will help stop the chain actions that ultimately destroy our earth.
We need sustainable goals not only to be talked about but also each citizen are to be a party to these. And why not then we also concentrate on a larger scale. We need to bring down the actions to the ground and not just keep it as a policy boardroom discussions and big-ticket events.
We can see much of the social re-engineering taking place if we give the responsibilities of keeping the mother earth safe in the hand of people and not make it as the responsibility of a single government. That way we will see the better light of the day in the future…
