Barak Valley | Kargil martyrs monument unveiled at Silchar

The Kargil Vijay Smarak was inaugurated today in Silchar, which is the first of its kind in Assam

Amidst great fanfare and show, Assam’s first monument dedicating to the Kargil martyrs of the Indian military forces was unveiled at Silchar’s END colony, today evening. The brainchild of Silchar MLA, Dilip Kumar Paul, who took this initiative a year back but owing to the Covid crisis could not inaugurate it on 26th July, last year, the day when Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated throughout the country.

The monument saw the light of the day today in presence of a plethora of guests which included  L. Brinda Devi, mother of Kargil martyr Late Nanda Chand Singh, Commanding Officer, Colonel Pankaj Awasthi, Military Station, Masimpur, former Union Minister Kabindra Purkayastha, MP Silchar, Dr Rajdeep Roy, noted sculptor, Swapan Paul who made it and many others.

MLA Paul was euphoric today, having garnered 10 lakhs from Chief Minister’s untied fund and an additional 7 lakhs from the MLA fund, the Kargil Vijay Smarak was inaugurated today in Silchar, which is a first of its kind in Assam.

Later, speaking to the media, Dilip Paul, said, “I am so happy today that I cannot express in words. Having been able to place this monument, our next generation would know the sacrifices made by our soldiers for protecting their motherland.”
