The India Meteorological Department (IMD) launched ‘The Climate Hazard & Vulnerability Atlas of India’ on Friday at an event to mark the 147th foundation day of IMD

The map has been prepared for the 13 most hazardous meteorological events that lead to the loss of human and animal lives, causing extensive damage and economic losses. Around 640 maps are available on the IMD website. The Atlas also provides separately the climate hazards and climate vulnerability.

The section ‘Climate Hazard Map’ includes maps on dust storms, hailstorms, thunderstorms, fog, lightning, wind hazard, extreme rainfall events, drought, and cyclones while the ‘Climate Vulnerability Map’ section has maps/information/data for cold waves, heatwave, floods, lightning, and snowfall.

IMD has the legacy of maintaining weather and climate records and monitoring & predicting the weather since its inception 147 years ago on 15 January 1875 in the background of a tropical cyclone hitting Calcutta in 1864, and the subsequent famines in 1866 and 1871 due to the failure of the monsoon.  During 147 years of its existence, the department has served the cause of safety and well-being of the Indian population against weather related hazards and to the economic development of the country. It is one of the few departments of the government whose services touch almost every aspect of life and across all sectors of the economy.
