The district administration of Cachar has been empowered to take necessary steps to control the chronic traffic problems of Silchar town in an all party meeting held at DC’s conference hall on Monday. The meeting was organised by the administration to find out the solutions of traffic congestion in Silchar town, which has been declared a city. Almost all the speakers expressed their views to remove the street-side shops that have sprung up in the city and also the shifting of parking slots in the different places of the town. All the members present in the meeting agreed to take stringent measures to control the traffic jam in the town.
Participating in the meeting, MLA Dipayan Chakraborty said that efforts were being made to use the road from the west side of Normal School to Chirukandi as an alternative road to control traffic congestion in the Tarapur area. Besides, the road from Capital Point of the city to Railgate No. 2 of Tarapur will also be widened. MLA Chakraborty said.
Taking part in the meeting, SP, Ramandeep Kaur said that temporary dividers could be installed on the main roads of the city if required. Rickshaws are plying in the city. The e-rickshaws coming from outside the city caused this traffic jam.
Autorickshaw organizations were also informed at the meeting that their autos were plying in the city through 36 parking points of the city but some buses of the State Transport Department were plying from Devdut ASTC station causing havoc traffic jams in the city.
BJP district president, Bimalendu Roy suggested shifting the parking slot of Shillongpatti to the area adjacent to the Narsingtola pond.
Expressing his views, BJP State Secretary, Kanad Purkayastha suggested removing of taxi stand from Sadarghat point.
According to the traffic police, the major business establishments in the city do not have parking slots for private vehicles and the traffic congestion has increased due to the movement of auto-rickshaws in the area along with the traffic police points.

Besides, the lack of parking slots for marriage and banquet halls and some private educational institutions has further aggravated the traffic congestion problem, the traffic police said at the meeting.
Speaking on the occasion, Cachar DC, Keerthi Jalli said that although it was not possible to convene a meeting on the initiative of the administration to resolve the traffic problem for the last one and a half years due to covid situation, regular meetings would be convened from now onwards.
The meeting was also attended by officials of various motor vehicle organizations, representatives of industrial organizations, officials of the Human Rights Commission and various top government officials.
