The suspension of the mobile internet services is to check the anti-social elements using social media, inciting communal tension in the state lately

In an order passed by the Government of Manipur issued by state Special Secretary (Home) H. Gyan Prakash, the mobile data services that provide internet connectivity in handsets have been suspended for five days across Manipur.

The order also said that there is an imminent danger of loss of life and/or damage to public/private property, and widespread disturbances to public tranquility and communal harmony, as a result of inflammatory material and false rumors, which are being circulated to the public through social media, etc.

The order further said that to thwart the design and activities of anti-national and anti-social elements and maintain peace and communal harmony and prevent any loss of life or danger to public/private property, it has become necessary to take adequate measures to maintain law and order in the public interest, by stopping the spread of disinformation and false rumours, through various social media platforms such as Whatsapp, Facebook, etc. on mobile phone and SMS,
