Government of India and Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council have completed all formalities for installing three hundred seventy seven numbers of mobile tower to connect its remotest areas with the rest of the world

Diphu : Karbi Anglong and West karbi Anglong will soon get a major boost in the telecommunication sector. This hilly autonomous region will be enclosed with a robust cell phone network.Government of India and Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council have completed all formalities for installing three hundred seventy seven numbers of mobile tower to connect its remotest areas with the rest of the world.

The massive expenditure will be borne by the Government of India under Universal Service Obligation Fund. Land acquisition from its own resources and private owners has been completed and Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, or Jio, will install the towers.

Secretary to the Chief Executive Member of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council Mukul Kathar told this scribe that since the inception of cell phone service in this region the council never received any revenue from the service provider. For the first time, the Jio company has paid thirty nine lakhs rupees to the council exchequer as revenue.

Kathar mentioned that under this ambitious plan the central government and council aims to provide excellent and inexpensive mobile and digital services across the rural and remote areas of this region; this will give access to knowledge and information.

Universal Service Obligation Fund is the pool of funds generated by 5% Universal Service Levy charged upon all the telecom fund operators on their Adjusted Gross Revenue .This fund is deposited in the Consolidated Fund of India and is dispatched on the approval of the Indian Parliament.

The Department of Telecommunications, Ministry of Communications governs the fund and related provisions. The aim of USOF is to provide a balance between the provisions of Universal Service to all uncovered areas, including the rural areas.
