Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will show a good performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections than the previous elections, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said in Morigaon on Tuesday.“We will show a good performance. But I can’t predict the number of seats we are likely to win,” Sarma told reporters after the state executive meeting of the Assam State Committee of BJP in Morigaon on Tuesday. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP secured 9 out of 14 seats. The state BJP has been implementing a Mission 12 Plus programme to win 12 seats in the upcoming elections.

“The party will have its own assessment, I will have my own. It [the result] will be better than before,” Sarma said.
“The Lok Sabha election winds haven’t even blown yet. It is not good to proceed with a number in mind at this moment,” Sarma also said. When asked about the delimitation exercise conducted by the Election Commission of India (ECI), the chief minister said, “If it materialises, the size of the constituencies would become different. If it doesn’t happen, the picture will be different. It is difficult to discuss the seat-wise prospects at the moment.”

“The total number of Assembly constituencies will remain the same at 126 even post-delimitation,” he said.“The delimitation exercise does not favour or benefit anyone permanently and it (delimitation) is generally a reflection of the people,” the chief minister also said. Briefing on the resolution of the state executive meeting, the chief minister said the meeting discussed strengthening the organization at the grass root level.

“The state executive meeting should be held after 15 days of the national executive. It is mandatory according to the constitution of the party. The discussions here were not purely election-centric. But when a discussion is held about strengthening the organisation, the issue of the election also comes in,” he said.

The party expressed gratitude to the chief minister for his steps taken for the development of the state,” a political resolution passed by the state executive committee said.

The party has also decided to extend its full help and cooperation to the state government in implementing the plans and policies in the coming days.It endorsed the state government for its effort to resolve the inter-state boundary disputes with Meghalaya, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh, provide land right to the indigenous people by implementing Mission Basubndhara 2.0, creation of new tribal belts and block at Sisi Tengani, the announcement of Ahom, Chutia, Koch Rajbongshi, Moran, Matak and Gorkha as reserved categories in JOnai and Sadia tribal belts and blocks.
