Amri Karbis demands constitutional shield

Diphu :   Students and youth of Amri Karbi community led by Amri Karbi National Council on Wednesday submitted a memorandum to the Governor of Assam at Raj Bhawan, Guwahati demanding a separate Autonomous district “Amri Longri” encompassing parts of Morigaon, Nagaon and Sonitpur districts of Assam under the provision of Sixth Schedule of the Constitution of India.

The Amri Karbi leaders have claimed that they are diverse from the Karbi community known as Chinthong and the Ranghang Karbis. They demanded creation of an autonomous district for protecting their regal inheritance. This was stated by Amri Karbi National Council President Padum Ingti in the memorandum submitted to Governor Jagdish Mukhi.

Ingti said the Amri Karbis had a separate identity during the 18th century and they were ruled by their own tribal kings during the Ahom regime. He informed that Amri Karbis are over 4 lakh in Assam; they are mostly settled in Kamrup Metro and Rural districts, he demanded Schedule Tribes (Hills) for the Amri Karbi community. He demanded creation of the Autonomous Council by curving out areas from Kampur, Morigaoan, Golaghat, Sunitpur, Nagaon, Cachar and Dubri district of Assam.
