Dengue cases on the decline

KRC TIMES Manipur Bureau

Imphal : While over 113 cases of Dengue have been detected in Manipur this year,  503 cases were reported last year. Dengue cases have been on the decline in the state, according to the state health services. Out of 16 districts in the state, Imphal West district recorded the highest number of vector-borne diseases, According to the state Malaria Officer Dr. Sanasam Gopal.

A maximum of Dengue cases are recorded in urban areas. The number of cases reported in different districts is 61 in Imphal West, 16 in Imphal-East, 12 in Thoubal, 11 in Bishnupur, four in Churachandpur, and one or two each in Kakching, Tengnoupal, Chandel, Senapati, and Kangpokpi district. However, there is no report of Dengue in the districts of Pherzawl, Jiribam, Tamenglong, Noney, Ukhrul, and Kamjong.

Mosquitos are responsible for Dengue disease and are mostly active during daytime and they lay eggs in clean water. The state government appealed to the public to look out for waterlogging in their areas. The appeal has been made against the backdrop of poor sanitation and a shortage of basic materials, including mosquito nets and repellents in the relief camps for the displaced persons. Thousands of displaced people are at present taking shelter in relief camps after ethnic violence between the Kukis and Meities since May 3.

Meanwhile, the state government has already taken up preventive measures including fogging, and chemical treatment/soaking of mosquito nets to prevent possible outbreaks of the disease. (The end)
