United Naga Council took out rallies at the district headquarters of Chandel, Tamenglong, Ukhrul, and Senapati amid tight security
Imphal : Thousands of Nagas took to the roads in the 4 district headquarters of Manipur and a memorandum has been submitted to the Prime Minister through a Deputy Commissioner on Wednesday.
Thousands of Nagas under the tutelage of the apex Naga body in Manipur, United Naga Council (UNC) took out rallies at the district headquarters of Chandel, Tamenglong, Ukhrul, and Senapati amid tight security. These districts which the Nagas predominantly inhabited there are in the hills of Manipur.
The hills of Manipur are inhabited by two main tribal communities – the Naga and Kuki-Zo. The hill areas of Manipur constitute 90 percent of the geographical area of the state.
In the memorandum the Prime Minister was pressed “To translate the Framework Agreement signed between the Government of India and the NSCN-IM on August 3, 2015, in New Delhi into political reality for enduring peace”. And “Naga areas in Manipur” should not be touched while attempting to address the demands of “any other community”. Notably, the second point came in the backdrop of the demand for “separate administration” by the Kuki community in Manipur.
The Kukis are demanding a separate administration for the Kukiland and are engaging in ongoing ethnic violence with the Meiteis since May 3 when over 160 individuals lost their lives so far. “Translate the Framework Agreement into political reality,” read the banners of the rally that were held by the participant in the rallies.
The memorandum was jointly signed by the President of UNC, NG. Lorho, General Secretary of UNC, Vareiyo Shatsang, President of Naga Women’s Union (NWU), Asha Wungnam, General Secretary of NWU, Changwiliu Newmai, President of All Naga Student’s Association, Manipur (ANSAM), Luikang Luckson, General Secretary of ANSAM, Angteshang Maring and Convener of Naga Peoples Movement for Hunan Rights (NPMHR-South), Joyson Mazamo.
