Tamil population dwindling at Moreh
Imphal : Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Monday said that an FIR has been lodged to nab those who made statements to leave Moreh town of Manipur, the gateway to the southeast Asian countries.Speaking to the media at his office, here on Monday, the CM said that there are certain media reports that people from the Tamil community who couldn’t pay extortion money have been asked to leave Moreh, Tengoupal district of Manipur.
In this context, the Chief Minister warned against such statements and stated that the government has been maintaining a restraint not wanting to escalate the crisis and in order to control the violence. An FIR has been lodged to nab the said person(s) and his accomplices.
The minority Tamil community at Moreh is sucked into a vortex of despair of the ongoing communal carnage between the Kuki tribals and non-tribals – the Mieties.
Notably, a total of 48 dwelling houses belonging to the Tamil community were burnt in the ongoing communal clashes at Moreh. Around 3,500 Tamils are residing at Moreh at present. The number of Tamils at Moreh has dwindled from around 8000 to 3500 at present. The armed tribal miscreant demanded huge amounts of money ranging from 1000 to 3000 from the Tamils as per their sources of income. The ethnic violence broke out on May 3 and over 160 individuals lost their lives.
