Imphal : A total of 227 children of 190 families staying in the newly constructed pre-fabricated temporary shelter homes in Sajiwa Jail Complex, Imphal East district have been provided financial assistance and eatables provided by the Indian Red Cross Society, (IRCS), New Delhi.

Governor of Manipur, Anusuiya Uikey who is also the President of the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), Manipur Branch paid her visit to the Jail Complex on Wednesday and extended financial aid and eatables for all 227 children. The inmates at this shelter home were from Ekou, Dolaithabi, Sadu Yengkhuman, Saikul, Etham, and Khuga Tampak, Churachandpur.

Regarding education for the children, she informed that the state will bear the fees of those displaced students studying in government schools and appealed to the parents to send their children to school as no child should be deprived of their education rights.

During the visit, the Governor interacted with the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) who are sheltered at the temporary shelter homes and said she would continue to extend her support to the affected people. Notably, over 160 people lost their lives and over 60, 000 people are displaced in the communal violence that erupted on May 3 in this sensitive border state.
