Defying curfew hundreds take protest rally at Imphal

Imphal : For the 3rd consecutive day on Thursday, hundreds of students defying an indefinite curfew took out a protest rally on NH 02 near the gate of Raj Bhavan and the state BJP unit office in Imphal at around 1 p.m. The protesters holding festoons shouted, “Down with Kuki MLAs” and “We want early justice.” The festoons read, “We demand justice for the murdered students Hemanjit and Linthoingambi and Immediate arrest of the culprits within 30 days wef 27th September.”

The event was jointly organized by six powerful student bodies in the state.
Under the strict vigils of the Superintendent of Police, Imphal West District Dr S Ibomcha, the protests were held. The protesters coming from different parts took out the protest rally violating the indefinite curfew imposed by the government in view of the deteriorating law and order situation of the state.

A leader of the protest said that their charter of demands include
1. All classes including DMU administration to remain boycotted until justice is brought to the bereaved family of the two students killed by Kuki Militants.
2. Immediate arrest of the culprits within 30 days wef 27th September.
3. Immediate lifting of the Internet ban by the government.
4. The government should be held responsible for all the victims Injured during the peaceful rally of the students, and
5. Removal of Rapid Action Forces from the soil of Manipur.
The protests were made after injuring over 200 people mostly students in the actions of the RAF and Manipur police during the past 48 hours in the state.

The students’ bodies are All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU), Manipuri Students’ Federation (MSF), Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM), Kangleipak Students’ Association (KSA), Students’ Union of Kangleipak (SUK), Apunba Ireipakki Maheiroi Sinpanglup (AIMS).

Manipur’s chief minister said that a special team of the CBI is investigating the case relating to the murder of the two students who were reported missing on July 6, 2023, when the state was in turmoil of the communal clashes between the Kukis and Meiteis.
