Chairman TaFMA Highlights Nagaland at Womex in Spain

Over 3,000 professionals, including 260 performing artists come together every October from 90 countries, making WOMEX the leading networking platform for the world music industry

Chairman of TaFMA, Theja Meru who has been invited as a Speaker Delegate to WOMEX addressed the Networking Session of the global event. Meru highlighted the unique aspects of Nagaland, shared the strengths of the Nagaland music and arts industry, and spoke on the special features of the legendary Hornbill Festival. He stated that the festival is showcasing the rich indigenous culture of the Naga people while celebrating music of all genres at the stand alone music festival that is one of the biggest across the region. He also met Alex Walter, the Director of WOMEX wherein he opened up dialogue for collective actions, possible partnerships, and collaborative actions towards promoting the music industry. 

WOMEX -Worldwide Music Expo – is taking place at A Coruna, Spain from 24th to 29th October 2023. It is the most international and culturally diverse music meeting in the world and the biggest conference of the global music scene, featuring a trade fair, talks, and showcase concerts. Over 3,000 professionals, including 260 performing artists come together every October from 90 countries, making WOMEX the leading networking platform for the world music industry. WOMEX hosts 7 stages, around 700 exhibiting companies, 100+ speakers, films, an opening concert, and an award ceremony across five packed networking days.

TaFMA Chairman stated that the objective of attending WOMEX was to foster discussion strengthen connections and position Nagaland as the upholder of art and culture in the world music and arts map. Meru said that participation in this event would make the stakeholders better understand the global trends in music and the possibilities to secure supportive conditions for artists and cultural ambassadors. He also met several policymakers, and stakeholders from the international music industry and discussed issues like improving and enforcing regulatory frameworks, expansion of international connectivity, rapid responses, and long-term strategies to effectively support artists and cultural ambassadors of Nagaland.

Meru thanked and appreciated the organisation of WOMEX for according the invitation which is a recognition of the music industry of Nagaland and the efforts being made by the Government of Nagaland through TaFMA under the vision and guidance of Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio. He expressed confidence that this experience would benefit the Nagaland music and arts industry in multiple verticals as there are several takeaways. 

In the next couple of days, the TaFMA Chairman will be participating in further dialogues, workshops, and seminars and will be holding more discussions with stakeholders of the international music and arts community.
