Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh presided over a crucial meeting with Manipur Police Service (MPS) officers in Imphal, on Wednesday (February 28), to address the grievances of state security personnel, who initiated a strike.
The meeting follows a protest by police commandos from four valley districts and the border town of Moreh in Manipur, who laid down their arms in response to the assault on Imphal West additional superintendent of police (ASP), Amit Moirangthem.
Moirangthem’s residence was also targeted by armed individuals on February 27 night.
Sources indicate that in addition to additional SP Amit Moirangthem, an officer-in-charge from Imphal West identified as P Achouba was also assaulted by unknown assailants.
It may be mentioned here that on February 27 evening an additional superintendent of Manipur police was abducted allegedly by cadres of the Arambai Tenggol, a Meitei organisation, in Imphal West district.
The Manipur police, in a statement, said that Imphal West additional SP Amit Singh was later rescued after a swift action by cops and security forces.
On February 28, Manipur’s police commando force staged an “arms down strike” in protest against the attack on the senior officer.
The commandos, stationed in Imphal city, laid down their weapons and ceased duties at the commando complex.
