Manipur Governor honors veteran filmmaker Aribam Syam Sharma
Governor of Manipur, Miss Anusuiya Uikey distributed the 15th Manipur State Film Awards, 2023, at the Palace Auditorium of Manipur State Film Development Society (MSFDS) in Imphal on Saturday.
Governor handed over the MSFDS Lifetime Achievement Award 2023 to Moirangthem Nilamani Singh, a prolific film personality, for his exceptional contributions to Manipuri cinema. Eminent film personality of Manipur and recipient of the MSFDS Lifetime Achievement Award 2010, Aribam Syam Sharma was also felicitated at the event. The best voice-over/Narration award was presented to the revered playback singer in Manipuri Cinema Chongtham Kamala at the event. The governor also handed over awards to the winners in different categories of Manipuri and Tribal Cinema during the award presentation ceremony.“
Speaking after the presentation ceremony, the Governor said, that Manipuri cinema has survived for more than four decades, starting with 35 mm black and white films. The contribution of video to the world of Manipuri cinema during the last one or two decades can be considered very significant. She said the Manipur State Film Awards has been an integral part of the cinematic practices of our state since 1984.
Inspired by the prestigious National Film Awards, these awards recognize and honour excellence in various categories, reflecting diverse talents and contributions. Governor said, that despite facing many challenges including limited resources and technical constraints, our leading filmmakers are carrying out their work with unwavering determination. Governor continued that it is a universally accepted fact that good films have an impact on society.
It is very permanent and effective in building the character of young minds. She appealed to the filmmakers to produce good films which would inspire the youth to stand up for righteousness and help achieve glory at the national level. “Lauding the efforts made by the organisers of the event, Anusuiya Uikey said, such efforts of the organizers are truly commendable especially the MSFDS for its sincere efforts to promote art and culture in the state. Such film award ceremonies will boost the morale of the filmmakers, directors and artists of the state.
She expressed confidence that the efforts of MSFDS will definitely help in raising the standards of Manipur Cinema. The governor also thanked the award winners and wished them success in their future endeavours. On the situation in the State over the last year, the Governor appealed to all to contribute to resolving the issue and bring peace and normalcy so that the age-old tradition of peaceful co-existence can be maintained.

Chand Cinema Archive & Museum on the upper floor of the Palace Auditorium. “The Chief Secretary of Manipur Vineet Joshi who presided over the function also echoed that Cinema can bring about societal changes and that he is proud of the activities undertaken by MSFDS particularly the restoration work of old films of state.“Commissioner Art & Culture, of Government of Manipur M. Joy Singh gave the welcome address and Sunzu Bachaspatimayum, Secretary, MSFDS gave the keynote address highlighting the activities of MSFDS and various initiatives undertaken.“ “A performance by SAMPA, a Manipuri fusion band had won the hearts of all, while a red carpet was walked by the awardees and film celebrities of Manipur.
