Although no injuries have been reported, hailstorms have left a trail of destruction in different parts of Meghalaya, affecting over 1000 individuals and damaging 483 houses.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings of continued heavy to very heavy rainfall in the Northeast region for the next 48 hours, heightening concerns about further damage and disruptions.
Matsiewdor War, executive director of the Meghalaya State Disaster Management Authority (MSDMA), reported incidents of the natural disaster from various districts.
Affected areas include Baghmara and Chokpot in South Garo Hills district, Mawkyrwat in South West Khasi Hills, Wapung and Saipung in East Jaintia Hills district, Thadlaskein and Amlaren in West Jaintia Hills district, Mairang in Eastern West Khasi Hills district, Nongstoin and Mawshynrut in West Khasi Hills district, and Mawphlang, Mawkynrew, and Mawryngkneng in East Khasi Hills district.
Nongbri, a representative of the SDMA, highlighted that South Garo Hills district of Meghalaya witnessed the most significant impact, with 282 houses damaged due to the cyclonic storm and hailstorm.
The assessment of the number of people affected by the disaster is currently underway.
“All districts have been directed to take immediate action for relief distribution and provide assistance to the affected individuals,” stated Nongbri.
Meanwhile, Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma assured swift action, stating that district administrations have been instructed to provide relief materials, including CGI sheets.
He noted that guidelines have been revised to facilitate the distribution of CGI sheets without prior approval from state authorities, ensuring expedited assistance to those in need.
