Himanta Biswa Sarma reacts to Pitroda’s remark on NE, says “I look like Indian. We are a diverse country”
In the wake of the ‘inheritance tax’ controversy that stirred within the Congress party, Sam Pitroda, Chairman of Indian Overseas Congress, has once again found himself at the center of a heated debate. This time, his remarks on India’s diversity have reignited a firestorm, drawing both criticism and scrutiny.
In a recent interview with ‘The Statesman’, Pitroda spoke about India’s diversity, remarking on the varied physical appearances of its people across different regions. He stated that individuals in the South “look like Africans”, those in the East resemble “Arabs”, and those in the North appear “white”, drawing attention to the rich tapestry of ethnicities and cultures within the country.
Despite the controversy surrounding his remarks, Pitroda emphasized India’s achievements as a shining example of democracy in the world. He highlighted the country’s ability to maintain harmony and coexistence among its diverse populace over the past 75 years, despite occasional conflicts.
Reflecting on India’s democratic ethos, Pitroda underscored the nation’s acceptance and celebration of linguistic, religious, culinary, and cultural diversity. He expressed his belief in an India where every individual finds a place and where compromises are made for the greater good.
However, Pitroda’s comments have drawn criticism for oversimplifying and potentially stereotyping India’s diverse population. While acknowledging the nation’s unity in diversity, critics argue that Pitroda’s remarks risk reducing complex identities to simplistic generalizations.
As debates ensue over the implications of Pitroda’s statements, they serve as a reminder of the ongoing discourse surrounding identity, representation, and inclusivity in India’s vibrant democracy.
A fresh controversy is brewing for the Congress party as Indian Overseas Congress chief Sam Pitroda found himself in hot water after making remarks deemed racist by several chief ministers from the Northeast. Pitroda, known as a close aide of Rahul Gandhi, described India as a diverse country “where people on East look like Chinese, people on West look like Arab, people on North look like maybe White and people in South look like Africans.”
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was quick to respond, taking to Twitter to rebuke Pitroda’s comments. “Sam bhai, I am from the North East and I look like an Indian. We are a diverse country – we may look different but we are all one. Hamare desh ke bare mein thoda to samajh lo!” CM Sarma wrote, essentially telling Pitroda to get a better understanding of the country.
As the row over Pitroda’s “inheritance tax” remark during the election season had barely settled, the Indian Overseas Congress head has once again stirred trouble for the grand old party, handing the BJP an opportunity to lambast their political rivals on a platter.
