Hailakandi is experiencing severe flooding after continuous heavy rains breached embankments on the Katakhal River, submerging 30 villages. The district’s major rivers, Dhaleswari and Katakhal, have been flowing above the danger mark since yesterday, exacerbating the flood situation.

The incessant rainfall over the past three days has led to widespread flooding across the region. Significant breaches occurred at two key points: the “Tasla” embankment in the Landjuri area and the “Ankai Lankai” embankment in the Kalaseda area, causing extensive damage to vast tracts of land and leaving thousands of people underwater.

A local resident expressed frustration, saying, “Today, the entire northern Hailakandi is flooded. Previously, we warned that the Ankai-Lankai and Tasla embankments would submerge, and we urged the flood control department and the government to address this issue and take care of the people in northern Hailakandi. However, they did not take any action. Now, the flood control department has finally arrived. Because of the negligence of the Hailakandi leaders, many people in Sudarshanpur Part 1, Sudarshanpur Part 2, Borhailakandi, Matijuri, and other areas are suffering due to this flood. Thousands of people are suffering because of this negligence. People are now questioning whether there is any effective flood control department in the Hailakandi area.”

Efforts are currently underway to provide relief to the affected areas, but the situation remains dire as thousands of families continue to struggle with the flooding’s impact. The community’s anger and frustration highlight the urgent need for effective flood management and preventive measures to avoid such disasters in the future.

A dramatic and harrowing incident unfolded in the Madhura Shil Koyari area of Cachar district when a dumper was swept away by the powerful current of the Madhura river.

The driver and handyman narrowly escaped with their lives by jumping off the vehicle just in time. The incident, captured on camera, highlights the escalating dangers posed by the region’s rivers amid heavy rains.

The Madhura river’s water level has risen significantly due to continuous heavy rainfall, causing powerful streams that have turned treacherous.

This sudden surge has impacted every river in Cachar, including the Barak river, leading to widespread flooding. Several areas in the district are now submerged under floodwaters, exacerbating the local crisis.

On the day of the incident, the dumper was in the process of fetching stones from the koyari. Unexpectedly, the vehicle became stuck as the river’s water level rose swiftly.

Within moments, the dumper was overtaken by the fierce stream. Thankfully, the driver and the handyman managed to escape by jumping into the river and swimming to safety, avoiding what could have been a fatal accident.

The increased rainfall and subsequent flooding have created a critical situation in Cachar, with numerous communities facing the threat of rising waters and the destructive force of swollen rivers.

Local authorities are on high alert, monitoring the situation closely and urging residents to take necessary
