The office of the Executive Engineer, PWRD Baithalangso Division, Donkamokam, has issued an urgent notice declaring the immediate closure of two bridges and a subway on the Baithalangso Kollonga Kheroni (BKK) Road.

The measure has been taken due to the dangerously high water levels caused by incessant rain, which have put these structures in a critical state.

The specific structures affected are, Weak SPT Br. No. 25/1 over River Kollonga and Weak SPT Br. No. 31/3 over River Dera -Subway near River Telehor.

The closure has been made effective immediately and will remain in place until further notice; to prevent any untoward incidents resulting from the movement of vehicles over these compromised structures. This order was issued yesterday.

Residents and travelers are advised to avoid these areas and seek alternative routes. The authorities are closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as necessary.

In response to the development of cyclonic storm “Remal” over the east central Bay of Bengal, the National Bulletin has predicted potential impact of the storm as it moves northwards. Heavy rain and strong winds are lashing the entire Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong district.

District Commissioner cum Chairman of the District Disaster Management Authority of Karbi Anglong Madhumita Bhagwati has announced immediate measures to mitigate potential risks. The Commissioner has issued an order for the closure of all educational institutions in the district till tomorrow.

The Cyclonic storm and sudden rise in the rainfall particularly in catchments have inundated vast areas of Howraghat plains of Karbi Anglong district.

One under construction RCC Bridge and a large portion of road constructed under Assam Mala project have been washed away. One large newly constructed RCC private building has also been swiped away.

After the release of excess water through six sluice gates, from the earthen dam of Karbi Langpi hydro electric project located near Baithalangso locality of west Karbi Anglong.

Vast areas downstream of River Borpani ( Um-Khem upstreams) have been inundated. Around nineteen villages in and around Baithalangso have been badly affected; under chest deep water.

The authorities in order to prevent any unfortunate events have closed the inundated road connecting Baithalangso with Hojai district.

Deluge in River Kopili due to incident rain and released water of the dam of Karbi Langpi hydro electric project have inundated many points of this PWD road. Situation remains grim in West Karbi Anglong.

The River Kopili has also become flooded with the excessive rainfall in its catchment areas that comes within Jaintia hills. Similarly the catchment areas of river Um-Khem (Borpani) of Meghalaya continued to be under red alert.
