Guwahati : Assam as well as Meghalaya braces for heavy rain and thunderstorms starting today.The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted widespread showers and warned of potential flooding, river rises, and landslides in the state over the next few days.

Rainfall accumulations could exceed 150 mm in some areas, posing a significant risk in Assam and Meghalaya.Meanwhile, the monsoon continues its advance southward, reaching southern Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

Residents in these regions can expect increased rainfall activity in the coming days.While Assam contends with heavy rainfall, heatwave conditions are expected to persist in Northern India.

However, the scorching temperatures exceeding 40°C are likely to recede from the Southern Peninsula later this week. In the west, a western disturbance will bring rain to the Western Himalayan Region starting Tuesday, June 4.

Apart from Assam, widespread showers and thunderstorms are also predicted for Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and Sikkim. It may be mentioned that with the heavy rains, floods have also been reported across Assam.

The flood situation in Assam continued to remain grim on Sunday, June 2, with three more fatalities, including two children, reported over the past 24 hours, and over 5.35 lakh people affected across 10 districts.

According to the flood bulletin released by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) on Sunday night, two deaths were reported from Cachar, while another was reported from Nagaon district.

With this, the death toll in the current wave of floods has climbed to 14. On the other hand, two persons, including a child, are reported missing in the Cachar district.

Nagaon continued to remain the worst-hit district for the second consecutive day where 3,03,567 people remained affected, followed by Cachar (1,09,798), Hojai (86,382) and Karimganj (20,463). As many as 39,269 displaced people are taking refuge in 193 relief camps across six districts, the ASDMA bulletin said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi  while reviewing the impact of cyclone ‘Remal,’ assured to extend aid to the affected states.

The Prime Minister was briefed about the impact of the cyclone on the affected states during the meeting held in New Delhi. The loss of human lives and damage to houses and properties due to floods and landslides in the Northeastern states of Assam, Mizoram, Manipur, Meghalaya and Tripura was also discussed, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said in a statement.

Several teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed which have carried out evacuation, airlifting and road clearance operations. During the meeting, it was mentioned that the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is in regular touch with the respective governments of the states that bore the brunt of the catastrophe, it said.    

PM Modi said that the Central government will continue to extend full support to the states affected by the cyclone. He also instructed the MHA to monitor the situation and review the matter regularly to extend necessary assistance for restoration, the statement added.

 As per the Assam State Disaster Management Authority’s (ASDMA’s) flood bulletin on Saturday, June 1, at least 11 people, including children, have lost their lives in the fresh spate of floods.

 On the other hand, nearly 6.2 lakh people across nine districts of the state had been affected forcing 41,564 people to take refuge in relief camps after being rendered homeless.

Moreover, the floods had affected 4878.5 hectares of cropland, nearly 2.3 lakh livestock and poultry, and scores of houses, roads and other infrastructures.
