Guwahati :  Civil rights organization Jeepal Krishak Samiti has criticized local and international NGOs for their lack of opposition to the proposed construction of a five-star hotel and resort at Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve (KNPTR) in Assam.

The group according to a report by The Wire alleged that the NGOs’ silence suggests collusion with the state government. Jeepal Krishak Samiti argues that the project, planned by the Hyatt Hotel Corporation, would be “catastrophic” for Kaziranga’s ecosystem and local communities.

The proposed hotel site, Hathikuli Inglay Pothar, is a traditional habitat for elephants and a crucial flood refuge for wildlife. The group also highlighted the demolition of a local resident’s home to make way for construction.

The rights organization specifically questioned the inaction of NGOs like Aranyak, Corbett Foundation, and World Wildlife Fund Nature (WWF), which have a history of environmental conservation work in Kaziranga. Jeepal Krishak Samiti also demanded to know why these NGOs haven’t filed public interest litigations to challenge the project.
