Assam has seven seats in the Rajya Sabha, of which six are currently held by the BJP-led ruling alliance
GUWAHATI : The BJP has announced its candidates for elections to the two vacant Rajya Sabha seats from Assam. Former union minister Rameswar Teli and senior party leader Mission Ranjan Das has been named by the BJP as its candidates for the upcoming elections to the two vacant Rajya Sabha seats.
The announcement was made by the BJP following a meeting between Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and union home minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Tuesday. It may be mentioned here that the Assam unit of the BJP had sent 10 names to the party’s central leadership for consideration.
The two seats fell vacant following the election of Sarbananda Sonowal and Kamakhya Tassa to the Lok Sabha. Assam has seven seats in the Rajya Sabha, of which six are currently held by the BJP-led ruling alliance.
The BJP held four seats until Sonowal and Tassa wer elected to the Lok Sabha, and one each by its allies AGP and UPPL. On the other hand, the remaining one seat is held by Independent MP Ajit Kumar Bhuyan.
The Rajya Sabha elections for the two Rajya Sabha seats in Assam are scheduled to be held on September 02.
