The 14th Dalai Lama was born on 𝐉𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝟔, 𝟏𝟗𝟑𝟓, 𝐚𝐬 𝐋𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐨 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐛  His name was changed to 𝐓𝐞𝐧𝐳𝐢𝐧 𝐆𝐲𝐚𝐭𝐬𝐨, which is short for 𝐉𝐞𝐭𝐬𝐮𝐧 𝐉𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐡𝐞𝐥 𝐍𝐠𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝐋𝐨𝐛𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝐘𝐞𝐬𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐞𝐧𝐳𝐢𝐧 𝐆𝐲𝐚𝐭𝐬𝐨. 

The current Dalai Lama was selected for the role when he was 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝟐 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐥𝐝, and formally recognized as the 14th Dalai Lama when he was 4. 
The current Dalai Lama is the 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐬. He has mentioned several times that he may also be the last of his line unless something changes.

Despite the 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐃𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐢 𝐋𝐚𝐦𝐚 𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐧 𝟔𝟐𝟐 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐠𝐨, 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝟏𝟒 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 have ever held the title.

The Dalai Lama grew up in Tibet’s thousand-year-old Potala Palace in Lhasa. But he has lived in 𝐞𝐱𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐚 since the Chinese Army crushed an uprising in his homeland in 𝟏𝟗𝟓𝟗. 

Even though the Dalai Lama 𝐜𝐚𝐧’𝐭 𝐬𝐰𝐢𝐦, his greatest fear is 𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐧 𝐛𝐲 𝐚 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐤. One of Dalai Lama’s 𝐡𝐨𝐛𝐛𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐫 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬.

The Dalai Lama was on the 𝐂𝐈𝐀 𝐩𝐚𝐲𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐥 ($𝟏𝟖𝟎𝐤/𝐲𝐫) 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝟏𝟗𝟓𝟎’𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝟏𝟗𝟕4.

In 𝟏𝟗𝟖𝟗, the 14th Dalai Lama was awarded the 𝐍𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐥 𝐏𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐳𝐞 for his work advocating nonviolent means to free Tibet from China.
