Respected Sir,

You have laid the foundation stone for the Special Economic Zone(SEZ) at Sabroom in South Tripura on 11.09.2020 (Friday), which is one of the very good steps for ushering in development. Heartiest Congratulations to you for this act!

During the foundation stone laying ceremony of this SEZ you told something, which was very unpleasant, disturbing and serious in nature for the general public of this country. Without any provocation, during the foundation stone laying ceremony, you had blamed some newspapers for misleading the people of Tripura overenthusiastically. You have reiterated that history will not forgive these newspapers and you will also not forgive them.  You mentioned, “What I say, I used to implement, take history as a witness”.  As the general public of India, we would like to share our views under the Freedom Of Expression.

During the foundation stone laying ceremony of SEZ in South Tripura, you were holding a constitutional post and additionally you were delivering a speech in a Government function as a Chief Guest. It is construed from your speech that you had threatened the newspapers. It sounds like a confession that you implemented in the past, what you had said. We believe, this threat is basically a bare demonstration of abusing political power to suppress the voice of democracy.

General people know that a Chief Minister of any state in India has enormous power. Neither we have ever seen any Chief minister threatening any media person in a Government program nor have we heard any Chief Minister threatening even his political opponent so openly and bluntly from the podium of a Government development program.  

As you have enormous power, we would kindly and humbly pray before you to use this power for the following, rather than threatening anyone

1.     Please use your power to improve the healthcare system in the state, especially COVID-19 treatment facility across the state including GB hospital

2.     Please use your power to improve the Government education system in the state

3.     Please use your power to save our mothers, sisters and children from facing abuse and brutality

4.     Please use your power to reduce unemployment in the state

5.     Please use your power to improve the infrastructure of the state

6.     Please use your power to bring business/investment in the state

7.     Please use your power to motivate and inspire the bureaucrat, senior Police officers and other Government officers not to leave the state or not to quit the job voluntarily.

8.     Please use your power to strengthen implementation of RTI Act in the state

9.     Please use your power to eradicate corruption in the state

10.  Please use your power to improve law and order in the state

In Tripura, the media has always played the constructive role for raising the voice of the general people. During earlier left front rule in the state, when the visibility of the activities done by the opposition political parties during most of the time was very less, only the media showed the hope to the people by raising issues related to public concern. Irrespective of the size of the media house and irrespective of their financial status, they raised voice against left front Government again and again without any hesitation, fear, or bias. I believe that the media is playing a pivotal role by doing constructive criticism in the form of identifying gaps during your regime also. Several news channels, online news portals and newspapers have flourished in the state during the last couple of years. These media houses are also generating huge employment in the state.  By threatening the media, you are basically hampering the reputation of Tripura. As well you are demoralizing the media persons of the state, who are performing their duties honestly and diligently. We feel very bad when such an incident occurs.

India is the largest democratic country in the world and the media is treated as one of the strongest pillars of our democracy. The media toe the line of Government only in few countries in the world, e.g North Korea.

If you think that any of our above-mentioned statements or words are unpleasant, kindly forgive us. The culture of forgiveness is taught to us by our great philosophers Sri Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa Dev, Swami Vivekananda, Mahatma Gandhi. We believe that your action as Chief Minister should replicate the role of a guardian in a family. Sitting on the 2nd highest constitutional post of the state, you can’t threaten anyone, even if someone has done a mistake also. We believe you are of the people, for the people and by the people. We are guided by the Principles of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, as well as by the Principles of Mahatma Gandhi. For the sake of saving democracy, we have raised our voice. 
We always strongly condemn any kind of threat to the media or anyone.
