The Central government is set to open the door for foreign universities to set up campuses in India
The Central government is set to open the door for foreign universities to set up campuses in India and to make it a reality on Thursday, the University Grant Commission (UGC) released draft regulations to allow foreign universities to enter India to which public opinion is sought by the commission.
The debate was always on regarding the same both in academia as well as in political space as any such step has its implications. With the entry of any foreign university in India where many will have off campuses, there is always a concern for the quality of education imparted as there is a huge concern we are observing with mushrooming private universities, particularly the state universities where the quality of education imparted is a big debate.
To look into the benefits of entry of foreign universities in India, the biggest take would be the accessibility of the latest education curriculum to the last mile students of India. Every student dreams of studying at the best Universities and thus the universities will be coming to their doorstep.
The standard of education will be the next aspect as the protocol itself will make the campuses run at a particular laid out standards of these foreign universities which we can hope will not be deviated easily looking into the brand image of these foreign entities. A ripple effect can also be observed with the entry of these entities where the Indian Educational institutions shall face competition and shall increase their standards as well as lower the cost of education.
The next level of opportunity would be the employment generation that shall take place which can be a welcome aspect and it is hoped that a higher standard of salary package can be availed. We can also foresee that many may shift from Indian universities for prospective opportunities which shall again create vacancies in Indian institutions. Overall a healthy ecosystem is expected to evolve in the education space in India.
The foreign Universities will also eye the Indian market looking into the talent pool of the country and the market size of a huge young population of India. The investment in Indian markets shall not be much of a risk and exposure should fetch them a healthy profit.
Also, it can be hoped that the research work shall get an upliftment in the Indian higher study arena as we lack on these front and Indian Universities are in a very sad state of affairs even though the Government is shouting at the top of their voices.
Coming to North East India is a big opportunity for the region as we have a substantial English-speaking population and if we can attract any such entity will be beneficial for the students of the region who travel in large numbers across India looking into lack of opportunities in the region.
For all these to happen, we need to first make our NE India peaceful, progressive, and productive…
