Veterinarians are just as important as other doctors in any field. Animals, whether pets or strays need love and care. And that’s where veterinarians come to the rescue. Every year on the last Saturday of April, people from all over the world come together to raise awareness of the important roles that veterinarians play. The World Organization for Animal Health and the World Veterinary Association make this day. World Veterinary Day is celebrated every year on the last Saturday of April. This year, World Veterinary Day will be on 30th April 2022. With increased awareness of animal health, people are slowly learning about the importance of veterinarians and their impact, on making our world a better place. To celebrate all the veterinarians across the world, we celebrate World Veterinary Day.

According to the declaration of World Veterinary Day 2022, veterinarians need equipment and support to maintain their health and well-being. The World Veterinary Association created World Veterinary Day in 2000 as an annual celebration of the veterinary profession, on the last Saturday of April. The 2022 World Veterinary Day will celebrate the efforts of veterinarians, veterinary associations, and others to strengthen veterinary resilience and bring attention to this important cause. However, veterinarians know that this burden can be overwhelming, both physically and mentally. Especially during pandemics, stress, burnout, and other health problems have increased in recent years. Veterinarians, like their patients, need the proper equipment and support to maintain their health and well-being. Healthy animals need healthy veterinarians. Veterinarians need to be better equipped to handle the daily challenges and crises.

It is about 1863 when Prof. Jay Gammi invited renowned veterinarians from across Europe to attend the first conference on animal health, especially epizootic diseases and their prevention. This meeting was the first International Veterinary Congress. In 1959, at the 15th International Veterinary Congress meeting in Spain, the World Veterinary Association was established. The association aims to bring to the fore the importance of veterinary science and raise awareness about animal health and welfare, including animal safety, rules of quarantine, etc. There are 72 countries representing national veterinary associations as members. In addition to advocating animal health and veterinary science, the World Veterinary Association declared the last Saturday of April every year as World Veterinary Day in 2001.

In 2001, the theme of the World Veterinary Association was Rabies. Therefore, veterinarians educate pet owners and NGOs about rabies, as well as campaign for free vaccinations for animals to promote a healthy environment for both animals and humans, including pets and outdoors. Including living animals. In 2020, the theme targeted the mental health of animals. Here, veterinarians spread awareness about the importance of animals’ mental health and how lockdown sequences affected both pets and street animals. This year people learned about many other branches of veterinary science like animal psychiatry, internal medicine, etc. The association brings awareness to various NGOs and officials who work tirelessly for animal welfare. It helps to run a charity for charity and active participation.
The World Veterinary Association and the Global Animal Medicine Association also distribute the annual awards. Only those people whose work/contribution is determined to be in line with the theme of the World Veterinary Association are eligible for this award. For example, in 2020, the Indian Veterinary Association of Kerala bagged the title of Best Veterinary Association with USD 2500. This was due to his outstanding work for the welfare of animals, especially street animals, by providing food and medicines amid the Covid-19 pandemic. The WVA made a mark with the love, care, affection, and right treatment of animals in great distress. On this day, the WVA holds a conference where they invite WVA members to discuss topics related to animal welfare and new veterinary science technologies while raising the bar of quality health care for animals. They organize various seminars to explore and share new knowledge about protecting our environment for future generations while ensuring human-animal coexistence.

Veterinarians are just as important as other doctors in any field. Animals, whether pets or strays need love and care. And that’s where veterinarians come to the rescue. From giving proper vaccinations to examining the health of pets including livestock, veterinary work covers all aspects of animal health, including animal abuse prevention, pain management, oncology, and more. Overall, veterinary medicine is concerned with the prevention, control, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases that impair the health of domestic and wild animals. Veterinarians work in different departments. From the care of wild animals in forests, national parks, zoos, and sanctuaries to veterinary hospitals, and NGOs, veterinarians play an important role in the maintenance of animals.

Some veterinarians work with non-governmental organizations to sterilize street animals, including free animal vaccinations, to improve the animals’ quality of life. The importance of quality veterinarians has increased enormously. But the number of veterinarians is still less than required, which makes a huge difference in affecting the health of animals in all areas. The objective of such an event is to create enthusiasm among the students to take up veterinary science as a career prospect and help increase the number of veterinarians in the country. World Veterinary Day also looks forward to improving research in veterinary medicine and veterinary science.
