On this National Endangered Species Day, let us all remind ourselves of the pressing need to protect and care for those species who are at the risk of being wiped out. As responsible countrymen, we owe it to our future generations to leave behind a nation where these beautiful creatures live in peace and harmony with us; sans the perils of extinction. This is the kind of example we ought to set for future generations.

Our state’s very own  Sangai (Rucervus eldii eldii; brow antlered deer) has had a touch-and-go affair with extinction for 6-7 decades due to low numbers. Although, their numbers have improved substantially they still remain in the endangered category. This implies the mission is yet not over for those who truly care for them.

For 3 decades, I have been involved in conservation activities of this beautiful species and its habitat, the Keibul Lamjao National Park (which started facing numerous ecological problems due to development projects undertaken in the past). I have managed to stay involved in this mission for so long because the bond I have with this species is one of the heart. It is a lifelong mission not bound to any condition. My only hope is my son’s generation recognise and understand the beauty of being involved in long term projects of saving wildlife.

Let us all try to spread a message of awareness to our friends, family on this day.

I also would like to express my condolences on the sudden demised of noted environmentalist Sunderlal  Bahugana. I am extremely dejected to hear about the demise of legendary environmental activist Sunderlal Bahugana due to COVID today.  

Bahugana ji who was the founder of the ‘Chipko movement’ was one of my heroes while growing up. He ignited a sense of ecological responsibility and ethos of love for nature among multiple generations, including mine. During my time as an active environmental activist, I met him twice and he was an excellent listener and a very humble man, full of simple but touching thoughts. His view on the earth we live in was that we are just tenants who have no right to fiddle with the natural balance of the place we are tenants in. His life and work are the stuff of legends and they will always remain an inspiration to me.

His demise is a huge loss for the nation.
