The construction of the 20 Km line will be less costly, as there is no river or hill in this area
It is with lots of expectation from the people of Manipur and for the greater ecosystem for sustainable development of the whole of NE India that we are in serious need of developing connectivity across the region.
And Railways are the backbone and the cost effective mode of any transportation model. Without a doubt, Manipur is also looking forward to being on the Indian railway’s map and we are hopeful that Imphal the capital will be connected by the beginning of 2024 if not earlier. This would ease lots of trouble for the people as well as for economic development and reduce the cost of living.
A North East based civil society namely Dr. Shyama Prasad Mookherjee Memorial Swartha Suraksha Parishad, Silchar has been actively voicing its concern on connectivity issues facing the region for a long time.
Haran Dey, the President of the organisation while speaking to this correspondent explains how a matter of rail connectivity if implemented will help the people of Manipur.
He explained that as we are aware that trains from the Manipur side that is Jiribum will go to Guwahati/ Delhi etc via Badarpur consuming extra time more than one hour and 40 km of the rail route.
Whereas if a 20 km rail line between Moinerband (3km from Silchar) -in the -Silchar-Jiribum section and Chandranathpur in the Lumding-Badarpur Hill section is constructed, then distance and journey time for train passengers from Manipur will be minimized. Distance and journey time for passengers from the western part of Cachar district including Silchar will be minimized, as they need not touch the crowdy Badarpur route which is an additional backward journey undertaken by the railways. Moreover, Railways will save fuel, etc, as there will be no necessity to touch Badarpur.
Haran Dey on behalf of the organisation has written communications to the various forums to sensitise the matter including letters to the Governor and Chief Minister of Manipur.
In the circumstances of the geographic reality, he requests to impress upon the Railway Minister to pass an order for the construction of a 20 km loop line from Moinerband ( Silchar-Jiribum section ) to Chandranathpur ( Badarpur-Lumding Hill section).
He also highlighted that the construction of the 20 Km line will be less costly, as there is no river or hill in this area.
