Imphal : Manipur Government has written a report to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs for the deportation of Myanmar nationals whose conviction period has expired after languishing in Manipur Central Jail, the oldest jail in the state.

Superintendent of Police, Manipur Central Jail, Bhadrika, said that there are a total of 121 inmates including  12 young boys and 13 young girls at present inside the jail. Out of them, four are ordinary Under Trial Prisoner (UTP), 12 UTP (Foreigner), 40 UTP (ND&PS) Act, one PIT-(ND&PS Act) detenu, three convicts, and 36 foreigner convicts.

For the betterment of the inmates, the state government in league with the Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW) would organize legal awareness and vocational programs inside the jail soon, the SP informed a visiting team of the MSCW.

MSCW chairperson Salam Ulka also stated that the Commission will assist in the deportation of Myanmarese inmates, whose conviction time ended. She would also take the problems and rehabilitation of inmates after getting released from jail.

The team led by the MSCW chairperson visited the jail and assessed the condition of the inmates, their security, medical and health care facilities, food, and initiatives are taken up to provide a source of life in and out of prison.
