Imphal : Demanding immediate release of five persons without any precondition, a 48-hour state-wide bandh effective from midnight of September 18 has been started. Several CSOs and Meira Paibis in the state have called the bandh to protest the police and security forces actions against several protesters who are demanding the safe release of 5 youths from judicial custody.

Various forms of protests in the valley districts of Manipur were launched for the third day on Monday. The protesters are demanding to release of 5 persons who were arrested by the police with sophisticated weapons in camouflage uniforms on September 16. The protesters also said that the agitations would be intensified from September 20 unless the demands are fulfilled.

Police said that in response to the arrest, a large number of people came out to protest and tried to storm Porompat PS demanding the release of the arrested persons. Joint security forces repelled the attacks by firing tear gas. The arrested persons were produced before the Judicial Magistrate and they have been remanded into further police custody.

Strict legal action is being taken against these anti-social elements, Manipur Police Control Room statement said. Essential services including media, medical, and water supplies will be exempted from the purviews of the bandh, a statement issued here on Monday said.
