Silchar : Gurucharan College one of the prominent premier educational institutions in Barak Valley is all set to hold the much awaited student union election on Friday amidst call for boycott by National Students Union of India (NSUI).
The situation is pretty tense. Despite this the college administration is determined to carry out the assignment in a glitch free manner.

The district president of NSUI Jaganmoy Choudhury has termed the entire exercise as a ‘stage managed’ event. All eyes will be on election incharge Abhijit Nath. Nath has alleged that Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) will surely flex its muscle in the student union election. “We are aware of all such hazards. Our aim is to ensure a free and fair election,” Nath said.

It needs to be mentioned here that the poll is being conducted after many years. Countering the charge of Nath the secretary of the town committee of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) Rohit Chanda who is also contesting for the post of president said, “This election is an opportunity to defeat the evil forces. I am confident of my victory. Many have left the race fearing defeat,” Chanda quipped.

About 20 candidates are in the fray this time. Mohadri Roy has won uncontested for the post of assistant secretary (girls). Abhishek Acharjya has also won uncontested for the post of souvenir secretary.

Both these victors are from ABVP. The remaining contest will be between 18 candidates. The contest is expected to be a tough fight, sources said. For the post of vice president Snehangshu Shekhar Bhattacharya is pitted against Ripon Choudhury. Tushar Ghosh, Dipali Das and nandini Ghosh will be contesting for the post of general secretary.

Ankush Deb, A Roahn Singh and Liton Das will be contesting for the post of assistant general secretary. For the post of sports secretary Rakesh Singh will be contesting against Gautam Das. Gobinda Paul and Bishal Das are pitted against each other for the post of cultural secretary.
