Over 26 lakh people have been affected by flood in Assam. Most of the people in different villages have been shifted to relief camps. But amongst the flood-affected families, many families have refused to leave their houses.
The reason is that their houses are the only identity marker of their identity proof. July 31st being the deadline for the publication of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), the residents are scared of losing their homes.
People who are being rescued make sure that they have their documents intact.1,01,085 people have taken refuge in 226 relief camps.
As many as 562 distribution centers have been set up for providing relief to the affected people.
The NRC was first published in 1951 to keep a record of the citizens and their possessions. But later during Assam agitation, the people of Assam demanded the updating of the list.
In minority-dominated areas of Assam, home and land are the only proofs of identity. At times even after moving to the relief camps, the families return to their homes to get back their documents.
As of 31st July, the deadline for the final publication of the NRC report is approaching, the flood-affected families are spending sleepless nights.
