Union Home Minister Amit Shah is visiting Assam on September 8-9 to attend the North Eastern Council meeting. The North Eastern Council is the nodal agency for the economic and social development of the North Eastern Region. Since the beginning, the main focus of NEC was to improve the connectivity of the region which has been a major challenge for the people of the region.
The NEC was established by North Eastern Council Act, 1971, The body was restructured in July 2018 by nominating the Home Minister as NEC Chairman and the Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) as the Vice-Chairman.
The meeting will be attended by Chief Ministers and Governors of eight northeastern states along with Union Minister of State, for Development of North Eastern Region, Dr. Jitendra Singh.
Shah would also review the situation of the state in the wake of the publication of the final NRC which was published on Saturday.
Amit Shah will hold a separate meeting with the Chief Minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal.
According to the final NRC list, out of a total of 3.3 crore applicants, around 19 lakh names were excluded from the list. The Finance Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma and state BJP chief Ranjit Kumar Das have expressed dissatisfaction as many genuine names were excluded from the list.
But they are hopeful of the fact that some genuine measures can be taken with the support of the Union Home Minister.
This would be Shah’s first visit to North East after being sworn in as Home Minister. He would consider the law and order and developmental issues of the region too.
