Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha from Assam’s Kaliabor constituency, Gaurav Gogoi wrote a letter to the Chief Minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal drawing his attention to the rising number of cases of drug abuse in the State.

He wrote, ‘The most unfortunate aspect of this phenomenon has been the alarming rise of addiction among the youths of the State and consequent increase in the drug related crimes. One media report indicated that within Nagaon district around 9 Kgs of heroin were seized from a single peddler. These drugs were being stored with the intention of traffic to different states of the North East and even to Myanmar via Nagaland. These incidents are a testament to increasing drug abuse and trafficking related cases in Assam’.

Looking into the negative consequences of drug abuse affect not only individuals who abuse these drugs but also have an impact on their families and friends, various businesses, and government resources, Gogoi urged the Chief Minister to take immediate steps to unearth and nab those involved in drug peddling in the State.

He requested the Chief Minister to constitute a top level special investigative team (SIT) to arrest the key culprits in the drug syndicate.
