Heavy downpours over the last two to three days caused landslides at many places in Dima Hasao followed by disruption in road communication badly.

On Friday morning a bus was stuck near S- turn on 27 NH causing disruption of communication. Many vehicles were stranded near N Leikul for hours.

Dima Hasao Deputy commissioner Nazreen Ahmed visited the restoration site and instructed the NHAI officials for an immediate restoration.  Deputy Commissioner Ahmed expressed serious concern over the negligence of both NHAI and the contractors engaged in maintenance work of this stretch from Nriambunglow to Jatinga. DC monitored the restoration work and instructed the NHAI officials to be more vigilant so that this lifeline for neighboring states as well as Assam should not be disrupted further. She also said this matter would be taken up with the government definitely.

Mention may be made here that the NHAI had engaged Laxmi Motor or Ratna Infra for maintenance on this stretch from Nriambunglow to Jatinga and Jatinga to Harangajao of NH 27 but Laxmi Motor or Ratna Infra failed to maintain. In the meantime, following the people’s out-cry the NHAI has approved 1823 crore for this stretch of 49 Km and also given the Letter of Award (LOA) to a Gujarat base A1 company with HAM policy. The works are expected to be started next winter as four to five months are required for the mobilization of the work.

Surface communication between Maibang –Haflong was again disrupted following landslides at S-turn on Saturday morning.

Vehicles stranded at S Turn of Friday

After several hours of restoration work by several machines, the road was cleared for traffic. But still plying of heavy vehicles may cause damage to the road further, people opined.

Continuous rainfall followed by communication disruption on one hand and uncertain power cut on the other, the normal life in Dima Hasao was almost paralyzed.

The power supply would remain cut off for an unknown period as the tower no 126 near Jiribam was damaged, the APDCL official informed. They cannot assure when the power could be restored.
