Guwahati : Owing to incessant rainfall from 30 June till now, the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has ordered the temporary closure of National Highway 27 in Assam connecting Haflong and Silchar from July 1 till further order.
The order issued by the District Commissioner of Dima Hasao read, “As per information received from NHAI due to continuous rainfall from 30th June 2024 till date, the following stretches of National Highway-27 were damaged due to landslides and flood i.e 1. Kapurcherra Near Crusher 2. Kapurcherra Near Railway Bridge 3. Dolaichunga and 4. Dibrucherra.”
It also wrote, “For the general information to all concerned that due to heavy rainfall time to time severe damages occurred in DD Road (Frpm Dehangi to Diyungmukh) & PGHJ Road (From Gunjung to Lower Haflong) has been closed temporarily for plying of all types of heavy vehicles and are advised to move following the road NH-27 (via Lanka-Lumding-Maibang) wef-from 01-07-2024, until further order.”
According to reports the Jatinga River has been overflowing due to the enormity of the rainfall in the last couple of days in Dima Hasao district leading to the submerging of the section of the vital highway between Jatinga and Haflong.
There are many travellers stranded in that stretch and vehicular movements have been disrupted. The concerned authorities are working to clear the road and restore access as soon as possible. The decision to suspend traffic aims to ensure the safety of commuters and prevent further incidents due to the adverse weather conditions.
