Members of various organizations gathered under the statue of Khudiram Bose in Silchar to pay tribute to the victims of the Manipur violence.

As per reports, their aim was to light candles and send a message to the central and state governments, urging immediate steps to restore stability in Manipur.

However, their efforts were thwarted by the police, citing prohibitory orders against public gatherings.

The district police administration had earlier declared that no gatherings, processions, or condolence meetings would be allowed under any circumstances. Anticipating the protest, a heavy police presence was deployed at the site.

As the organizers began to assemble and display their banner, the police intervened, seizing the banner to prevent its use. When participants attempted to light candles in remembrance of the victims, they were stopped by officers present at the scene.

Expressing their frustration, the organizers questioned the administration’s actions.

“We are living in a country where we are not even allowed to pay tribute to the departed souls. This is a violation of the constitutional rights of citizens,” one protestor stated.

They alleged that the police’s actions undermined their fundamental rights and accused the administration of stifling peaceful expressions of solidarity.

The incident has sparked outrage among participants and supporters, who called for a reconsideration of such prohibitive measures.

They demanded the government respect citizens’ rights to assemble peacefully and honour the victims of the Manipur violence.
